Although Frank Lloyd Wright designed houses, churches, and commercial buildings in differing styles, he is probably most associated with the Prairie Style, which dates from approximately 1893 to the First World War. It seemed to embody his most significant philosophical ideas about architecture and brought him both national and international acclaim. It is important to note that The Westcott House is the only example in Ohio of Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Style. Respected historian Grant Carpenter Manson refers to this period as "the first Golden Age of Frank Lloyd Wright," and many other scholars consider it to be Wright's most significant architectural period. The Westcott House is a consummate example of Prairie Style architecture. Now fully restored, The Westcott House ranks among Wright's most significant contributions in Prairie Style architecture as it successfully balances all the important elements of the architect's mature work.
Esteemed Harvard Art and Architectural History Professor Neil Levine described the significance of the Westcott House as "representing one of Frank Lloyd Wright's top twenty houses." We believe that The Westcott House will be embraced as a major rediscovery of a "thought to be lost" Wright masterpiece and will attract visitors not only locally and regionally but nationally and internationally.
With the restoration completed The Westcott House Foundation board and staff are focusing on the development of a vision and plan for the future that builds upon Frank Lloyd Wright’s legacy and Springfield’s rich heritage of industrial innovation. Partnering with leading experts in architecture, design and education, the foundation envisions a center of excellence for design integration and innovation that will help reposition Southwestern Ohio as a source of creative talent and innovation.
