    • The 2006-2007 season begins with three favorite works of the classical repertoire. The exciting Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin, by Richard Wagner, kicks off the program. Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, "Emperor," is one the composer's most frequently performed works. This grand-scale piano work will be performed by Russian-born Kirill Gerstein, one of today's most promising and intriguing young artists. Shostakovich composed his monumental Symphony No. 5 as a response to Soviet criticism of his fourth symphony. It is said that the applause after the symphony finished was longer than the symphony itself, so overcome were the audience having listened to a piece of music that wasn't afraid to display some real human emotion.
