The 1950's musical comedy, Damn Yankees, is an adaptation of the Faust legend, set in Washington D.C. Based on Douglass Wallop's best-selling novel, The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant, the "Damn Yankees" of the title are the New York baseball team - in the 1950's the almost sure winners of the American League Pennant. The musical brings to life Joe Boyd, a long suffering Washington Senators fan who would sell for "one good long ball hitter." Enter Mr. Applegate (the Devil) who offers to grant his wish. Joe insists on an escape clause, setting up a continuous battle between Joe and Applegate for Joe's soul. "Damn Yankees" opened on Broadway May 5, 1955, featuring Gwen Verdon, Ray Walston, Stephen Douglass, and a young Jean Stapleton. The creative team of director George Abbott, choreographer Bob Fosse, and Composers and Lyricists Jerry Ross and Richard Adler, who had just had a major hit with the pajama game, turned from the theme of America at work to that of America at play. Damn Yankees won the Tony awards for "Best Musical" and "Best Composer and Lyricist." Join us for a light and humorous performance that reflects society as accurately today as it did in the 1950s.
