  • Choral Arts of Springfield will close their 2006 - 07 season with a performance of Johannes Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) Op. 45. This remarkable and groundbreaking work will be the first public performance in Springfield in nearly four decades. Brahms labored over this work for eleven years beginning in 1857. By 1861 Brahms had completed four movements but it was not until 1868 that all seven movements were completed. Ein Deutsches Requiem is Brahms’ largest work in any medium and is scored for chorus, soprano and baritone soloists and orchestra. In this magnificent, non-liturgical work, Brahms carefully and sensitively borrowed from Scripture passages dealing with the subject of the frailty of humans. Brahms does not dwell on the deceased as in the traditional Latin Requiem text but on the living in a series of beautifully woven passages concerned with comfort, faith, consolation, joy, heavenly bliss, victory over death and finally—eternal peace. It is a celebration of those who have gone before us. Join the Choral Arts of Springfield for their performance of this masterpiece, unique in all choral literature! This performance is made possible by generous sponsorship from the Turner Foundation and the Springfield Foundation.
