Upcoming Art Exhibition at Urbana University
The next Artist Exhibition will showcase local artist, Mike Major from March 10 – 20, 2008. The Major’s exhibit will open with a “Meet the Artist” reception on March 10 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and will be open weekdays from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. through March 20. Mr. Major has art studios in Urbana, Ohio as well as Phoenix, Arizona. He is well known for the monumental scriptures he has created in bronze for public and private collections across the country. Notable works include portrait sculptures of Woody Hayes, Jackie Robinson, and Vince Lombardi. In his home state of Ohio, he served as the first artist-in-residence for the Ohio Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts. He was honored recently by the State Legislature and the Ohioan Library for outstanding contributions in the State of Ohio in the field of art. Mr. Major is currently creating a series of ten larger than life monuments commemorating outstanding leaders of Springfield, Ohio which will be located throughout the downtown area. Mr. Major received a Bachelor of Science from Ohio University in Athens and a Master of Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute in New York. He has had his drawings and paintings commissioned by such international companies as IMB Corporation, Shearson Lehman American Express, J.C. Penney Company, Chrysler Building, Grimes Aerospace, Nationwide Insurance, Dean Witter Reynolds, (New York), First National Bank of Gary (Indiana) M and M Bank of Springfield, Ohio, Perpetual Savings and Loan (Urbana, Ohio) and Whirlpool Corporation. He has published thirteen books of drawings and illustrated Heart and Soul of the Nation by Bantam Doubleday Dell.
